Organisation of the College The College comprises two schools, under separate principals and Boards of Management. Currently, the President of the College of the College is Fr. John Flavin C.S.S.p. The Junior and Senior Schools are so geared that the transition from primary to secondary departments is made without a break in outlook, aims or spirit. THE SENIOR SCHOOL St. Mary’s is an academic school where children are encouraged, under the tutelage of committed professional teachers, to think in terms of third level education. There is an emphasis on written homework, rigorous study programmes and constant monitoring of progress. Parents are kept informed by reports home every three weeks. In the Senior School, students sit full formal examinations twice yearly. The boys' academic results speak for themselves. We have identified three key factors which help our students achieve academically: 1. Care and concern for the individual.
We are a relatively small school and a crucial benefit of smaller numbers is that our teachers and pupils know each other very well. We can give individual care and attention to pupils and this extends beyond the classroom into the daily life of the students, leading to a high level of achievement in both academic and non-academic areas. 2. Highly qualified and experienced staff. Good academic qualifications and experience gained in other schools are important criteria in our selection of teachers. The College benefits enormously from the continuity of longer serving teachers and from the fresh perceptions of the newer staff members. There are a range of talents and a broad breadth of experience among the staff. 3. Excellent pupil teacher ratio. Across the school as a whole there is roughly one teacher for every fifteen pupils, which makes it possible for us to cater for the individual needs of every pupil.
St Mary’s provides a broad and balanced curriculum. The following subjects are available for Junior Certificate; Gaeilge, English, Mathematics, French, German, Latin, History, Geography, Art, Science, Business Studies, Music Appreciation, Religious Education, Civic Social And Political Education, Physical Education, Computer Studies. The majority of our students take higher-level papers in the Junior Certificate examination.
